Pruitt Igoe is the site of a former housing project on St. Louis’s north-side. It was demolished in the mid 1970’s and has remained vacant since. A forest has grown up in its place.
My design for the Pruitt Igoe Now design competition includes a large urban farm on the southern half of the site. This farm will provide jobs and food for local citizens. I also chose to keep most of the existing forest, elevated boardwalks will bring visitors through this nature preserve and through designed wetlands that occupy the footprints of the former buildings. The wetlands provide additional habitat, as well as show visitors where some of the demolished towers once stood.
